Glossary
Clipping terms explained
The key terms you'll come across when making clips from long videos — explained briefly and without jargon.
- Short
- A short vertical video (9:16), like those on YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok. Usually a few seconds up to about a minute long.
- Clip
- A segment of a longer video. One long video can be cut into several clips that each work on their own.
- Hook
- A clip's opening — the first few seconds that decide whether someone keeps watching. A strong hook makes the point right away.
- Vertical (9:16)
- The vertical aspect ratio for phone screens. LucFlow crops clips to 9:16 so they fill the screen on Shorts, Reels and TikTok.
- Captions
- On-screen text that transcribes what's said — important because many clips are watched without sound. LucFlow generates captions from the video's audio.
- Viral Score
- An internal estimate of how well a moment works as a standalone clip. It helps sort the suggestions — it isn't a promise of reach.
- B-roll
- Extra footage laid over the main recording to make a clip more varied.
- Split screen
- A split image — for example facecam on top and gameplay below. That keeps both layers visible in vertical gaming clips.
